Langton’s Noenia

HughHornbyLangton.jpg

Hugh Hornby Langton, librarian, editor, historian, translator (b at Québec C 29 Aug 1862; d at Toronto 30 Sept 1953), son of John LANGTON. Educated at the University of Toronto, he was the first full-time registrar of the university 1887-92 and its librarian 1892-1923.

When the Faculty of Music was established in 1918, there was no dedicated library and a limited budget for acquisitions. The donation of this copy of Hermann Goetz’s cantata Noenia by U of T Chief Librarian Hugh Hornby Langton in 1922, could be considered the University’s first official commitment towards a dedicated music collection.
